What is a Drain Tile System?

A drain tile system is a type of drainage system which ensures that your basement or crawl space cannot be flooded by ground water. This system ensures that in periods of heavy rain or snow, your basement and/or crawl space cannot be flooded, which also means you avoid expensive damage to these areas of your home. The diagram below gives a visual of how a drain tile system works.

But then if this is what a drain tile system is, then what is a drain tile itself? Usually, the drain tile is a type of porous plastic PVC pipe or flexible plastic pipe that is laid beneath the ground around a home’s foundation. The water collected in the pipe is then either directed downhill away from the house by gravity or is directed into a collection pit where an electric sump pump removes it from the house. This pipe collects water from both the roof of the house as well as any excess ground water which collects during times of rain or snow. The pipe which goes around the house is often referred to as a perimeter drain tile.

A draintile is a pipe that goes around the perimeter of your home and to the storm sewer.
